SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

Americans started wearing red on Fridays in 2005 to show their support for the service members. That’s just one way to Support to Our Troops. Although I know we can do SO much more considering they protect our freedoms. “Wear Red Friday” is for service members still actively deployed; RED meaning “Remember Everyone Deployed“. In the decade since, thousands of individuals, organizations, and business have begun observing it. It is just one small way to show support for our men and women in uniform. This is a small way to let the American service members know how we appreciate their sacrifices. How grateful nation can never forget what they do for us.

Here’s a bit of a history lesson…

There are numerous days throughout the year to honor those who served and continue to serve. Armistice Day a.k.a Veterans Day; a federal holiday celebrated on November 11. For all those that have served in the United States Armed Forces. Other countries celebrate this holiday as well; as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. World War I officially came to an end at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. As of 1954 at the urging of Major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day .

Memorial Day, the United States celebrates at the end of May honors those who died while in military service. Veterans Day, as the name implies celebrates the service of all honorably discharged U.S. military veterans. Finally, Armed Forces Day, remembrance that also occurs in May. Is to honor those currently serving in the U.S. military.

Search “Support Our Troops”, there you will find organizations such as AMVETS (American Veterans), VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), DAV (Disabled American Veterans), American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, and so many others. You can volunteer, donate and/or purchase products.

In 2001, my husband and I joined AMVETS he as a Post member and me, the Ladies Auxiliary. It has proven to be a great experience. We have both volunteered for numerous activities that were held to benefit the veterans and the community. He served as a Trustee and in the Veterans Council Honor Guard and over the years, I served as 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Treasurer, Hospital Officer, and Sgt. at Arms.

AMVETS, is a Congressionally-chartered veterans service organization open to representing the interests of 20 million veterans and their families. Serving veterans since 1944.

There are many Support our Troops organizations that collect various items to create care packages to send to the troops. Not just during the Holidays, although that is how it began. As a way to enhance the morale of deployed soldiers based all over the world. I, myself have volunteered at a local Armory to pack boxes and it was amazing the amount of donations and number of volunteers that showed up to pack boxes. It just goes to show how much people appreciate the sacrifice of the men and women in uniform.
